expected to throw their literary treasures, especially those at Bikanir and Pattan, open to him. In this case the Professor might be able to throw some further light, with the help of hitherto unknown material, on Hemachandra and the other great sages of Jainism. Such visits of European savants to this country. which happily are becoming more frequent every year, may prove of mutual benefit, if the other Indian communities follow the example of the Parsis who willingly and frankly showed Professor Jackson everything they thought likely to interest him and to be of use for his further studies. The enlightened Jain community will doubtiess do the same to their distinguished visitor and thereby advance the knowledge of their religion among themselves as well as the rest of the world.

એક વિદ્યાર્થી અતિથિ. જેવી રીતે અમેરીકાવાસી છે. વીલીયમ્સ જેકસનના ઘણા વખત પહેલાં અત્રે થયેલા આગમનથી પારસી લેકમાં ઉશ્કેરણી થઈ હતી. તેવી જ રીતે બન યુનીવર્સિટીના જેનીઝમના પ્રખ્યાત સ્કોલર ડો૦ હુમન જેકોબીના અત્રે આપણી વચ્ચે થયેલા આગમનથી જૈન કેમમાં ઉશ્કેરણી થયેલી હોવી જ જોઈએ, અને અમે ખુશી થયા છીએ કે જેન એશીએશન આ જર્મન પંડિત પાસેથી ભાષણે અને અન્ય ઉપાદ્રારા જૈન કે મને લાભ અપાવવા માટે પ્રયત્ન કરી રહી છે. આગલે દિવસે ( જૈન ગ્રેજયુએટ્સ એશીએશન તરફથી ) તેને અપચેલ માનના મેળાવડામાં જેમ ડેવ જેકેબીએ કહ્યું તેમ, તે હિંદુસ્તાનમાં પ્રથમ વાજ આવેલ નથી, પણ પિતાની કારકીર્દીની શરૂઆતમાં ચાળીશ વરસ અગાઉ તે આ દેશમાં તેવીજ મુસાફરીએ ભાષણ આપવા આવેલ હતા અને તે વખતે મુંબઈ કેળવણી ખાતામાં નોકરી કરતા પ્રખ્યાત ડો. બુલર સાથે જેસલમીર અને બીજી જૈન ભંડારની તેમણે મુલાકાત લીધી હતી. ત્યાર પછી તેમણે જૈન સાહિત્ય અને જૈન ધર્મને ઉંડે અભ્યાસ કર્યો છે, અને યુરોપ તથા અમેરીકામાં બુદી ઝમથી તદ્દન જુદોજ, બહુ પ્રાચીન અને અગત્યને જૈનમત છે તેમ સાબીત કરવામાં તેઓ બહુજ સાધનમૂત થયા છે. જૈન ધર્મ બુદ્ધ ધર્મની શાખારૂપે તે દેશમાં ભૂલથી ઘણા લાંબા વખત સુધી મનાયા કરતા હતા. આ ધર્મ માટેની તેની શું ધખેડળ પાશ્ચાત્ય અકેલમાં બ૪ પ્રખ્યાતિ પામેલી છે. અને પૂર્વના પવિત્ર પુસ્તકની મેકરામુલાની સીરીઝમાં જૈન ધર્મના કેટલાક પુતાના ડે
