મ જ ુજારા કઢી ઉત્પન્ન થાય છે. આવી રીતે માયાકપટ એક દુઃખને કે પાપને ઉત્પન્ન કરનારજ નથી પણ પાપશ્રેણીને અને કષ્ટરાશિને જન્મ આપનાર છે. તેજ મુદ્દાપર ૧૭ મા સૈકાના એક વિદ્વાન પાદરી લખે છે કે
Hyprocrisy cau not so properly be said to be one single sin, as the sinfulness of other sins; it is among sins, as sincerity is among graces; now that it is not one grace, but an ornament that beautities and graces all other graces.
“ ખીજા' પાપાના પાપપણાની પેઠે વ્યાજખી રીતે ભ-જાળને એક પાપ કહી શકાય નહિ. શુભ કાર્યમાં સરલતા-સહૃદયતા જેવા ભાગ ભજવે છે તેવો દંભ પાષ કાર્યોંમાં ભજવે છે. સહૃદયતા તે કાંઇ એકજ શુભ કાર્ય નથી, પણ તે તે ઘરૈણા જેવી છે જે ખીજા' શુભ કાર્યોને શોભાવે છે અને દીપાવે છે.”
આટલા ઉપરથી કપટવૃત્તિ કેવુ' ભય'કર પાપ છે તે બરાબર સમજાયુ હશે. એટલા માટે સરલતા રાખવાને વારવાર ઉપદેશ આપવામાં આવે છે, દંભનું' વિ શેષ સ્વરૂપ અને પરિણામ જાણવુ' બાકી રહેતુ નથી, હવે માત્ર એક એ વિદ્યાના તેના સ’બધમાં શું કહે છે તે જોઇએ. A. Warwick નામના ઇગ્લિશ લેખક કહે

Hyprocrisy desires to scem good rather than to be so; honesty desires to be good rather than seem so. The worldlings purchase 44 eputation by the sale of desert, wise men buy desert with the hail of reputation. I would lo much to lhcur well, more to deserve well and rather lose opinion than merit. It shall more joy me that I know myself what I am, than it shall grieve me to hear what cthers report me. I had rather deserve well without praise, tha do ill with commendation.
આ વ્યવહારૂ વાકયમાં બહુ ઉપયોગી રહસ્ય સમાયલું છે; એને ભાવ બહુ વિચારવા ચેાગ્ય છે. નીચે પ્રમાણે તેના ભાવાર્થ છે. “ દુભ સારા થવા કરતાં સા દેખાવાની ઇચ્છા રાખે છે; પ્રમાણિકપણુ' સારા દેખાવા કરતાં સારા થવાન ઇચ્છા રાખે છે.મૂર્ખ માણસે સદ્ગુણુ વેચીને તેના વડે માન ખરીદે છે,સુજ્ઞ (ડાહ્ય માણસા પેાતાની કીર્ત્તિને ભાગે પણ સદ્ગુણુ ખરીદ કરે છે; હું' મારું પોતાનુ સ સાંભળવા માટે ઘણું કરૂ, સારાને લાયક થવા માટે તેથી પણ વધારે કરૂં, અને ગુણુ ખાવા કરતાં મારા સંબધીને સારા અભિપ્રાયપ્રથમ ખાવાનું સંદ કરૂ મણ મારા સુ'બધમાં શું કહે છે એ સાંભળીને મને ખેદ થાય તેના કરતાં હું-
