Pray the Devil Back to Hell (Premier Film Series Selection) Room 214 Film Pray the Devil Back to Hell' chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. Thousands of women-ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim-came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white t-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they took on the warlords and nonviolently forced a resolution during the stalled peace talks in their country. The film was directed by Gini Reticker. Q & A to follow.
Taking the Initiative...the Role of Youth in Global Interfaith Action Sarah Talcott Patrick Nickisch Room 216 Seminar The purpose of United Religion Initiative (URI) is to promote daily, enduring interfaith cooperation, end religiously motivated violence, and build cultures of peace, justice and healing for the Earth and all living beings. The URI is a group of youth leaders who bring this purpose to fruition in daily life and work. The group will present the synopsis of the URI Young Leaders Program, which began in Mayapur, India, and has grown into a long-term plan for building the interfaith youth movement. The India program, 'Taking the Initiative: The Role of Youth in Global Interfaith Action', brought together 100 young leaders from across the religious spectrum for a weeklong gathering. Complete with the sharing of sacred practices, dialogue groups, cultural exchange through art, dance and music, the creation of action agendas, and a service project, it was truly a monumental gathering of impassioned youth. But the real work started when each individual returned home with a renewed spirit and a wealth of knowledge about how to extend this exceptional model of peaceful coexistence. The URI will present model projects these young leaders have organised in their communities since then, discuss the core values they share, and introduce their unique methodologies. Sarah Talcott is the United Religions Initiative Director of Youth Programs, which involves hundreds of young people from 65 countries. Sarah has worked in the interfaith cooperation and understanding field for ten years. In her work, Sarah combines interfaith learning with community service and peacebuilding training. She has organised and facilitated interfaith youth exchanges, workshops and projects in the USA, UK, India, Cyprus, Spain, Brazil and Peru. Patrick Nickisch is a Hindu-Vaishnava of German origin and a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. Patrick participated in the URI young leaders program in Mayapur, which opened his eyes to a complex peacebuilding world and led him to his current position in the URI Europe and the Global Office. He is pursuing degrees in Religious Studies and Gaudiya Vaishnava Theology and is helping to develop curricula for a new university project in Germany.
Dance Workshop - Expression of Emotions Divya Jain Vivek Jain Room 215 Interactive Workshop Peace, truth, love, righteousness and nonviolence are all essential religious values for living in today's increasingly complex world. Artists can communicate these values to a broad audience through the media of drama, dance and music. Sacred dance and music have no religious barriers and are a proven way to keep youth connected with traditions and promote peace. Movements from classical Indian dances are being adapted increasingly to modern dancing and other exercise classes. In this workshop, the dance guru Divya Jain will explain the body movements related to expressions of love, anger, joy, wonder, courage, sadness, fear, disgust and peace. Participants will enjoy learning to express their emotions in this unique, interactive dance workshop. Divya Jain is an accomplished Indian classical dancer and choreographer. Over the last 20 years she has performed in many prestigious cultural, interreligious and charity events in India, the USA and around the world, including the Dharma Music Concert at the 2006 Montreal World's Religions Congress in Canada, and the 2007 Monterrey World Religions Congress in Mexico
