Faith, Culture and Policing: The Victorian Experience Ashley Dickinson Kerryn Hynan Yasser Soliman Ramzi Elsayed Geoffrey Zygier Reverend Dr John Broughton Gurdarshan Singh Gill Room 216 Panel Discussion Victoria Police has committed to three strategic priorities for the five-year period from 2008 to 2013. One of these priorities is connecting the community. In order to meet its commitment to its richly diverse cultural and faith communities, Victoria Police is constantly building upon existing partnerships and implementing further measures to ensure its service delivery is equitable, responsive and client focussed-one such measure being the Victoria Police Multi-Faith Council. This session will highlight some of the achievements of Victoria Police and the MultiFaith Council, in connecting the community and creating a more just and cohesive society for all Victorians. Commander Ashley Dickinson is head of the Victoria Police Operations Coordination Department with responsibility for slatewide proactive and strategic operational initiatives including youth, multicultural, multifaith and Indigenous portfolios. He is also the corporate sponsor for Mental Health. He has broad experience in operational and administrative areas of Victoria Police, serving at country and metropolitan locations. As a Commissioned Officer he has worked in a variety of staffing positions from Commander to Chief Commissioner Inspector Kerryn Hynan is a Regional Police Manager and a member of the Victoria Police Multifaith Advisory Council Mr Yasser Soliman is a Commissioner with the Victorian Multicultural Commission and a member of the Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria. Yasser served as President of the Islamic Council of Victoria and as a member of the Council for Multicultural Australia Mr Ramzi Elsayed is President of the Islamic Council of Victoria. Ramsay holds a Bachelor of Business degree and is a qualified accountant. Ramsay was active with Young Muslims of Australia and is a member of various advisory and steering committees including the Council for Chaplaincies in Tertiary Institutions Geoffrey Zygier is Executive Director of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria and an observant Jew. He has a strong personal commitment to a diverse Australia. As a former teacher, lawyer and senior Commonwealth public servant, Geoffrey has enjoyed many years experience in multicultural/multifaith activities. Reverend Dr John Broughton is a former police officer, a minister of the Uniting Church, and Victoria Police senior chaplain. John completed an internship with the NYPD Chaplain's Unit in 1996, and gained his doctorate from the San Francisco Theological Seminary in 2002. John has been an active participant in interfaith dialogue since 1992 Gurdarshan Singh Gill is a past President of the Interfaith Network of the City of Greater Dandenong and the current President of the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria. Gurdarshan has served in various Executive positions with the Sri Guru Nanak Satsang Sabha, a premier Sikh organisation in Victoria, formed in 1981. Gurdarshan is committed to promoting understanding and harmony among Multicultural Communities.
Feeding a Plan of Action for the UN Decade of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace (Session 2) Gerardo Gonzalez Dr John Taylor Mussie Hailu Room 217 Symposium This symposium is organised by the Initiative for a UN Decade of Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace. This second session will continue the presentation of successful stories of partnership. These stories will focus on the field of human rights, including social, economic, and cultural rights, and the prevention of religiously motivated conflicts. There will then be a period of interactive sharing of experiences with the participants, including suggestions for the plan of action of the Decade. A report on presentations and discussions will be made available at the Initiative's website (www.faithdecadeforpeace.net). Gerardo Gonzalez holds a doctorate in Social Psychology from Paris University 119691 and worked for nearly 30 years as a UN international officer. Since 1998 he has volunteered in the field of interfaith cooperation for peace, including directing the project toward the creation of a spiritual forum for world peace at the United Nations. Currently, he is coordinator of the Initiative for a UN Decade of Interreligious Cooperation for Peace. Dr John Taylor is a representative of the International Association for Religious Freedom in Geneva, and Vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the Coalition. He holds a PhD from McGill University and for many years worked for the World Council of Churches. Mussie Hailu is Continental Coordinator for United Religions Initiative IURI) in Africa. A respected international peace advocate, Mr Hailu is also chair of the Board of the Interfaith Peace Building Initiative of Ethiopia and works with many other international organisations for the causes of peace and interreligious harmony.
Stop the Traffic, People are Not for Sale: Human Trafficking and Slavery in the World Today Danielle Strickland Sr Pauline Coll Sr Stancea Vichie Room 218 Interactive Workshop Human trafficking is a global phenomenon. Underlying the organised crime of human trafficking are root issues such as inequality. poverty and gender discrimination. Stop The Traffic is a global movement initiated by Christians to prevent this modern-day slavery of human trafficking, particularly of women. This workshop, presented by workers and activists in the field, will highlight the efforts of the Salvation Army and the Roman Catholic Church in Australia to counter human trafficking. The
