SAHARA - South Asian Helpline & Referral Agency

Since its establishment in 1991, SAHARA has evolved into an innovative, dynamic, non-profit organization serving the South Asian residents of Southern California. SAHARA is committed to serve the growing community of South Asian residents with information, referrals, and support services.
Activities guided entirely by a volunteer executive board, SAHARA provides:

Telephone consultation and information Counseling services and peer support group Medical care Legal services Information on state and local financial assistance programs Shelters for victims of family violence Shelters for homeless
SAHARA Youth Chapter was established in 1992 to provide help and guidance to South Asian youth.
A special SAHARA Senior Chapter to serve senior citizens/residents of South Asian community in Southern California was formed in 1993. Volunteers organize events and seminars to help members make necessary adjustments to local culture and deal with changes in their daily life. Activities include:
Periodic health fairs for South Asian senior citizens Educational seminars to promote public awareness on issues relevant to the
South Asian community • Recreational activities like Diwali program and summer outings
SAHARA staff consists of volunteer - professionals of South Asian origin. Many of our Jain Center members are serving on the committee. The volunteers devote time and effort in the success of SAHARA. It has become a role model for other Indian community groups. SAHARA is spreading its wings far and wide. In 1996 a Senior Chapter was established in San Diego.
