South Regional Convention
The Jain Group of North Texas is currently working on organizing a South Regional Convention. The concentration will take place in Forth Worth, Texas at the Park Ventral Hotel during Memorial Day weekend (May 29th - May 31st).
The theme of the convention will be Humanities in Jainism and will focus on aspects such as art, architecture, literature, music, philosophy, and science/technology. Dancing, skits, murals, music, keynote speakers, and discussions are some of the methods that will be used to incorporate these six aspects of humanities in Jainism. For more information, please contact the YJA South Regional Coordinator, Shefali Parekh, at (504) 865-4616 or via email at sparekh@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu.
South East Convention
The South East Regional Convention has again proven to be a success for all included! The third of it's kind, the theme was Jainism: An Old Religion in a New World. People from across the globe gathered to celebrate their common beliefs, or to learn about other ones.
One unique aspect of the convention was the ability for a participant to get to know all the others who attended on a very intimate level.
The accessibility of the speakers for one-on-one questioning was unparalleled.
The mornings began with yoga and meditation exercise led by the revered Samani Madhur Prajna and Samani Akshaya Prajna.
The afternoon activities included discussions and lectures led by Pravin Shah, Manhur Parekh, and Samani Madhur Prajna and Samani Akshaya Prajna.
Some of the topics discussed were What it Means to be a Jain in America, Peace of Mind, A Jain Diet, Jain history, Jain Rituals, Jainism in America's Future, and the Jain Universe.
The evenings provided time to unwind with dinner, dancing, gaarba, raas, and even a cultural put on by convention participants!
In short, all who came learned more, got to know each other, had fun, and made memories to treasure.
Local Representative Packets
The Director of Public Relations is currently working on putting together a local representative packet to be sent to all local representatives of YJA. The purpose of this packet is to create more uniform regional councils across the states.
This packet will include an organizational overview of YJA, the mission of YJA, membership forms, guidelines on how to start a youth group, workshop ideas, foster focus information, description of local representative communication with YJA, and more.
It will serve as a foundation for new youth groups and an organizational aid for existing ones. If you are interested in becoming a Local Representative for YJA and would like to receive a Local Representative packet, please contact our Director of Public Relations, Shefali Parekh, at (504) 865-4616 or sparekh@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu.
Editing Jain Stories
In an effort to give back to the community and help future Young Jains, YJA is asking for your help with editing Jain stories online. It is simple:
1. Go to www.jainism.org 2. Click on a story.
3. Copy it to a word processor and edit it for grammatical errors (put it into proper English form.)
4. Email the edited version to Neha Vagadia (YJA Director of Education) at nvagadia@iris.nyit.edu with the title of the story as the subject of the email.
5. Feel good, knowing you have helped the Jain community.
JAINA Convention
Youth Forum This year's JAINA convention offers a variety of activities for youth, offering a healthy balance of both educational and social activities.
Engaging discussions will help us understand how Jainism can be applied to modern practice in such forms as investing, comparative approaches to how Jainism relates to other philosophies, and how Jainism views paranormal phenomena.
In addition to the traditional ice-breakers, there will also be a youth party and cruise.
To obtain more information about youth activities at this year's convention, please contact Cannon Ghelani at cghelani@novora.com.
