________________ CONCEPT OF NON-VIOLENCE OF SIX BODIED JĪVAS IN JAINISM Dr. Navin Kumar Srivastav Today, all individuals, group and nations are facing problems in one form or the other. Some of these problems are psychological tension arising from economic inquiry and consumer's culture, social problems and disintegration of society due to conflicts of ideologies and faiths, political problems such as arms race, war and terrorism and the problem of human survival linked to production and ecological balance. The world is torn by tension, strife, crime and religious conflict. People are suffering from uncertainty about future and lack of peace in their mind. Many individuals are trying to find solution of their problems. Religion emphasizes that the peace of mind comes from tolerance and contentment. Moral and spiritual values including virtues such as non-violence and truth can lead to genuine peace. However to a large extent, these virtues are ignored on account of the glitter of materialism fuelled by greed and desire to get ahead of others. Nevertheless, most of the people on earth have no peace of mind. In spiritual terms, that we are living for satisfaction of our animal's instinct only. Spread of violence has become a global issue before the humanity. It is the root cause behind prevailing unrest and problems in worldwide society. That is why Jainism considers non-violence and truth as fundamental values for maintaining peace in the society. Lord Mahāvīra was an apostle of non-violence. He was the first person who was convinced that not only the mankind but all the moving and nonmoving living beings should be protected and should not be harmed because just like any human being it does not want any harm to be done to it. Mahāvīra is the first person who endeavored to mould his life in such a way that he may not be willingly harmful to anyone.
