________________ Bhājyam Sūtra 61 The monk described in these Sūtras (160-164) is said to have crossed the stream of life, gone to the other shore, liberated, and free from attachment. The crosser of the stream is so called because he has crossed the stream of the habits and instincts produced by karma or the cycle of worldly life. References : 1. Samiyā - asya padasya samskrtarūpadvayam bhavati -samyaksamitā ca. samyak iti yathārtham. śamitā iti kașāyasya upaśamaḥ. Cūrņikāreņa 'samyag' arthaḥ svīkstaḥ - sammam kevalanāņeņa dattham (p.172). Vịttikāreņa asya padasya arthaḥ samatā iti vihitaḥ - samaya tti samatā samaśatrumitratā tayā aryaiḥ dharmaḥ pravedita iti (patra 189). pāțhāntare 'samayā' iti rūpamlabhyate. asya samyak, śamitā, samatā - trayo'pi arthāḥ samgatāḥ santi. tathāpi 'samatā' iti mukhyatvena bhāșye vyākh-yātam. 2. Ācārānga Cūrņi, p.172 : ņisāmiyā ņāma suņittā, soccāņisāmaņāņam ko viseso? soccā kimci kevalam suttameva, na puvvāvareņa ūhittā hitapatthaviyam, imam puņa soccā hitapatthavitam. 3. Uttarajjhayaņāņi, 19.25. 4. Ibid, 19.90. 5. Ibid, 32.106,107. 6. Višeşāvaśyakabhāsya, gāthā 2673 : sāmāiyam ca tiviham sammatta suyam tahā caritram ca. Vịttiḥ - trividham ca tribhedam sāmāyikam, anusvāralopāt samyaktvam samyaktvasāmāyi-kam, śru-tam śrutasāmāyikam, tathā cãritram cãritrasāmāyikam. 7. Ācāranga Cūrņi, p.173 : nihaņamti vā gūhanamti vā chāyaṇasti vā egatthā. 8. There are two possible behavioural patterns of those who have renounced the world. Some sādhakas keep up the same zealous leonine spirit with which they renounce, while others, although renouncing with leonine spirit, practise it with a craven cowardly one.
