think that it can safely be accepted, because Cunningham's and Bhagwanlal's lithographs present the same reading. In my explanation of the word, however, I differ form Mr. Jayaswal, who translated, 'fairbrown'. I do not think that Khāravela's complexion would be likely to be mentioned. I explain kadăra as corresponding to kațāra, which according to the Sabdamalā means nāgara and kāmin. Sirī-kadāra is the lover of Śrī, i.e. Kļşna, and Khāravela's boyish games are compared with Krsna's pranks and sports in Vịndāvana. I accordingly translate the opening passage as follows : 'by the Aryan great-king, the great Meghavāhana, the increaser of the royal Ceti lineage, of exalted auspicious marks, provided with virtues famous to the four ends (of the word), the overlord of Kalinga, the illustrious Khāravela, boyish games were played for fifteen years, his body being (like) that of Sri's lover'. Khāravela's family accordingly belonged to the Cedi lineage, and even if the family, or tribe, was descended from the Cedis mentioned in the Rgveda, the Hāthīgumphā record contains the first authentical reference to it as a royal dynasty. We are told that Khāravela was the third ruler of the Kalinga line, and I have already remarked that we must infer that the family came into power in Kalinga after Aśoka's conquest. Now Mr. Jayaswal has" drawn our attention to the existence of an old Oriya manuscript in the Indian museum, which contains some ślokas about the Aīras of Utkala, i.e. apparently the same royal line to which Khāravela belonged : Ahiro nāma rājabhūt cOtkale vidyate (vidite?) purā/ ahimsādharmam aśritya buddhadharmaparāyaṇaḥ.// 1 Nandarāja(h) suvikhyātaḥ(-to) Magadhe vidyate tadā/ sākarapāśako Nandahl - ndo) vedadharmaparāyaṇaḥ//2 Nandasya sahito yuddhe Aīro jitavān bhavet./ Aīro jayam āpnoti mahāhrstena mānasaḥ./ svadharma(-rme) Otkale khyātiḥ(-tim) vedadharmavināśakaḥ.//3 Asokasya mahāmittra(h) Aīra(h) Utkaleśvaraḥ./ Ekaprastarakhande tu purāṇaḥ parvatottamaḥ./ Khaņdagir(i)ti nāmāsan(-āsīt) pavitra(s) cOtkale bhuvi.//4
