________________ Vol. XVIII, No. 2 35 #foqata sufafa). At the end of the 44th verse the editor has added : "Further, this work is broken" (3 afusait ST FT:) M. R. Bhat, the editor of the Brhatsarhitā, while introducing the chapter on "Angavidyā" writes (p. 432): "The commentator (i.e. Utpala) is of the opinion that this chapter may not be by Varāhamihira himself”, but any way, (in the opinion of the author J.C. Jain 'the Science of Limbs' does form a part of the contents of the second chapter (II. 18) of the Brhatsaṁhitā.1 By making a closer study of these two works we notice much similarity between their contents and even the titles of certain chapters are identical. The Uppātanajihão (53) of the Angavijā is the Utpūtādhyāya (46) of the Brhatsaṁhitā, containing 99 verses, the adtalikkha (antariksa) and bhomma (bhauma) types of utpåta are mentioned in both, then we have the vutthidarajjhão in the Arga (20) and the Sadyovarşanādhyāya (28) in the Brhat, the Jattajjhão (the inilitary expedition 147) and the pavāsajjhão (travel, 43) in the Anga and the Yogayātrā, also known as Brhadyātrā, Brhadyogayātrā or Mahāyātrā (March under an auspicious constellation) in Varähamihira and so on. Besides, there are various kinds of terms and expressions with regard to prognostication, augury, omen, portent, bodily signs, dreams and so forth which are identical in the works of Varāhamihira and the Prakrit Jain works written on secular literature. Jains also observed certain omens and portents. Auspicious tithi, karana and naksat ra were taken into consideration while undertaking a journey or going to attend some important work. A Jain monk is prohibited to have svādhyāya (religious study) at day-break (pūrvasandhyā) and evening time (paścima-sandhyā, compare the Sandhyālakşaņādhyāya of the Brhat (30), a chapter dealing with the indication at dawn and twilight). Svādhyāya was prohibited if there was preternatural redness of the horizon (diśādāha, compare with the digdāha (glow at the horizon 31) of the Brhat the earthquake (bhūmi-kampa) with the bhūkampalakṣaṇādhyāya (32) in the Brhat, a fiery meteor falling from 1. However, Pandit Ambalal P. Shah says that the Angavidyāśāstra is a separate work by an unknown auther (ISBI, V p. 218), which does not seem to hold good. 2. It had a commentary of Suryadeva Somasuta of Naidhruva gotra. Kern bad edited 9 chapters of this work. Now the entire work has been published, ed. by J. L. Shastri, I.A.I.B. p. 27, N.R. Bhat. Intr., p. XIV. 3. नभः प्रसन्नं विमलानि भानि प्रदक्षिणं वाति सदागतिश्च । __ दिशां च दाहः कनकावदातो हिताय लोकाय स पार्थिवस्य ।।-३१.५ Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
