Two kinds of Conduct - one based on Jainist wisdom; Other is of the restraint induced form.
These two types of Right Conduct are based on eight dõsē - flaws (Skt. doșas) and eight guņas - virtues. Sammattacaraṇa cārittar is that which is devoid of eight dosē explained in the Agama and samjama caraṇaṁ is based on the observation of eight guņās.
Sammattacarana carittaṁ - Righteous Conduct This is characterized by flaws and virtues as explained: .
Evam cia nāvuņa ya savve michhattadosa saskāyi Parihara sammtamală Jiņabhaniyā tivihajõyeņa - 6.
Know all these dubious flaws - And follow the sayings of Jina to thaw .
Ņissaṁkiya ņikkaṁkhiya ņivvidigimchā amūdhditti ya Uvagūhana třidikaranaṁ vachhalla pahāvanā ya te ațța - 7.
Eight vapid thoughts The cause of eight passions.
The flaws are:
The guņās are: [a] saṁkāyi (Skt. samkā) - doubt
nissaṁkiya (Skt. nihisaṁkīta) -
doubtless [b] kānkšā (desire)
ņikkaṁkiya (Skt. nihikāaksita) -
without desire (c) vicikitsă (aversion)
nirvicikitsā (non-aversion) [d] amudhadrști (noncomprehension of faith) mudharști (comprehension of
faith) e) anupagūhana (unprotection of faith) upagūhana (protection of faith) {f) asthitikaraṇa (deviator from faith) sthitikarana (believer of faith) [g] avātsalya (piety to faithful)
vātsalyā (nonpiety to faithful) [h] aprabhāvanā (non-advancement of faith) prabhāvanā (advancement of
faith)
Therefore the sammattacarana cărittam describes that it is necessary for the faithful to adhere to the right-faith at the mental level and to exercise all that is possible to protect and promote. In other words, it occurs at the mental-frame.
