________________ PREFACE The present issue of the trilangual Nirgrantha, the second in the series which was launched last year by this Centre, contains several research papers and a few articles of somewhat general nature, a large majority of these of course on Nirgranthist themes. Some of these papers add fresh material augmenting the mass of the already known infarmation. These plausibly will help carry forward the knowledge in some areas and on the other hand may compel to revise the supposedly wellestablished facts, positions, and postulates. The scholarly responses to the first number have been positive and encouraging. A few inevitable shortcomings noticeable in the first issue--due largely to the inexperience of the personnel involved on the production side-have been largely taken care of in the current issue. Hopefully, then, this second issue, too, will be welcomed by the academics connected with Indological researches, particularly the Nirgranthologists in India and in the West. We gratefully acknowledge the co-operation of the scholars who contributed to this issue, which is dedicated to the memory of the great savant of Prakrit language and Nirgrantha culture and philosophy, Professor Jagadishchandra Jain.
