________________ Vol. XXXI, 2007 ON THE FIRST SENTENCE OF VYUTPATTIVĀDA:... The distinction of sentential cognitive structure (śābdabodha) is presented at least in three levels: (a) Distinction of the cognitive mechanism and cognitive structure of (Śäbdabodha) from the other cognitive mechanisms and structures namely pratyaksa, anumāna, upamāna etc. (b) Distinction of the methodology and process adopted for the presentation of Śābdabodha in Nyāya school of thought from those of the others like Prābhākaras, Bhättas, Vaiyākaranas etc. (c) There is also a distinguishing feature of the theories in the sub-schools in Navya-Nyāya systems itself, namely the school of Prakaratā-vāda and Sassargatāvāda that has occupied a lot of space in the dialectics. The debate on “ ekapadārthe aparapadārthasya samsargah" is also very interesting as far as the intricacies on the presentation and mutual relation of the word-meanings are concerned. That leads to invoke many principles like: Principle 1: "dharma-visistaḥ samsargaḥ ākānkṣā-bhāsyaḥ, vaisistyam ca svāvacchinnānuyogitā nirūpakatvam, svetara-dharmävacchinna-pratiyogitā nirūpakatvam iti rītyā". Principle 2: upasthiti-visayatā-visistaḥ sassargaḥ ākārkṣā-bhāsyah, vaišistyam ca svaprayojyaśābdabodhiyaviśesyatānirūpakalvam svanirūpitatvābhāvopasthitiyavisayatāprayojyaśābdabodhiyavisayatāp rayojyaprakārakatānirūpakatvam iti sainbandhadvayena. These and the other principles and their validity along with their applicability and necessity are discussed in due course. Therefore, I do not want to elaborate on them here. Concluding Remark: The whole debate on the first sentence of W can be taken as an instance of the seriousness of the Pundits and in-depth inquisition of śāstric studies ev second half of the 20th century. Here the commentators leave no stone unturned to defend their thesis on the sentential cognitive episode according to the school of Nyāya. There are many principles being introduced for the first time in their effort to do so. The validity and applicability of these principles in a broader
