However three Devanāgarī manuscripts (D1.3.6) referred to for the Critical Edition of the Mārkandeyapurāna have added the following verses as marginal gloss in explanation of the above phrase of eighteen defects. शंकितं भीतमुद्धृष्टमव्यक्तमनुनासिकम् । विस्तरं विरसं चैव विश्लिष्टं विषमाहतम् ॥ काकस्वरं शिरसिगं तथा स्थानविवर्जितम् । व्याकुलं तालुहीनं च पाठदोषाश्चतुर्दश । संगीतं शिरसः कम्पमल्पकण्ठमनर्थकम् ॥ The Panini-siksā7 (32-33) has mentioned some six qualities and six defects of a reader/pāthaka. गीती शीघ्री शिर:कम्पी तथा लिखितपाठकः । अनर्थज्ञोऽल्पकण्ठश्च षडेते पाठकाधमाः ॥ माधुर्यमक्षरव्यक्तिः पदच्छेदस्तु सुस्वरः । धैर्य लयसमर्थं च षडेते पाठकागुणाः ॥ Moreover, there is also enumeration of Eighteen defects of the Speaker in the Pāṇini-śikṣā (34-35) शंकितं भीतमुद्धृष्टमव्यक्तमनुनासिकम् । काकस्वरं शिरसि गतं तथा स्थानविवर्जितम् ॥ उपांशुदष्टं त्वरितं निरस्तं विलम्बितं गद्गदितं प्रगीतम् । निष्पीडितं ग्रस्तपदाक्षरं च वदेन दीनं न तु सानुनास्यम् ॥ The Yājñavalkyaśiksā8 also contains some such verses, with slight variations. The six virtues of a good speaker and six defects of a bad speaker are also referred to. गीती शीघ्री शिर:कम्पी तथा लिखितपाठकः । अनर्थज्ञोऽल्पकण्ठश्च षडेते पाठकाधमाः ॥ माधुर्यमक्षरव्यक्तिः पदच्छेदस्तु सुस्वरः । धैर्य लयसमत्वं च षडेते पाठका गुणाः ॥ -याज्ञवल्क्यशिक्षा It is to be noted here that the Yājñavalkyaśiksā also contains the enumeration of the fourteen defects of the reciter.
