________________ J. C. Sikdar 116 The commentator interpreted the meaning of vāriya of the gatha, Varivasa vyavar' as väritavān. This meaning was followed by the Curņikāra. Even reaching closely the meaning of these two words "Vari' in two cases, the straight meaning of the word Väri' as sin cannot be made, in a real sense both point to one and the same thing. «Vāritavān sişyān limsānštasteya parigrahebhya iti....... Sarvasmadakrtvā dalmānami sisyam ca väritavāniti...... sarvavāri. sarvavaranasila i tyarthah"41 "Prabhuh bhagavāni sarvaväram bhauso niväritavan ctaduktam bhavati, prānatipatanişedhadikam svato' anuşthāya parāmsca sthāpitavan"42 So the direct meaning of the word "Vāri'43 is prohibited or fit for prohibition. It would be correct, if the mearing of the word "Vāri' found in the reading of the Pitaka is accepted in the sense of sin in all places. Here it is also proper to see the 58th gathā of Isibhāsiyāim, supporting the meaning 'sin'. "Savvattha varac dante savvavārihim varie. savvadukkhappahine ya siddhe bhavati nirae."44 Foot-Note 1.
