Kundakundacarya: His Life and Works

The year of ascension (nirvāṇa) of Lord Mahavira is 527 B.C. After him there were only three persons who obtained omniscience in this cycle of time-Gautama, Sudharma and Jambu. After these Kevalins (omniscients), there followed a long succession of apostles who can be classified into four categories depending upon their store of knowledge. Those who had complete knowledge of the spoken word (śruta-jñāna), those who had limited knowledge of the ten Purvas and the eleven Angas, those who knew only the Angas, and those who had knowledge of only one Anga (Acāra). The periods of their ministry are detailed below:
