________________ APRIL, 1992 which has only one udd., whence its peculiar name; sattikka, sattikkaya, explained by saptaikaka.80 They existed in conjunction with one another originally, and formed a whole before they were placed here.81 Their names are: 8. thaṇasattikkayam, sthānasaptaikaka. 9. nisihiya, nisithikā (also niśi°); begins: se bh. vã bh, vã abhikaṁkhe nisihiyam gamaṇāe. Very brief. 10. uccara-pasavaṇa (prasravana). 11. saddasattikkaa, sabda. 243 12. damsana, darśana; rūvasattikkayaṁ V. 13. Without any specific title, accord. to V. parakiriyāsattikkayaṁ ; ragadveşotpattinimittaprati ședhaḥ. 14. Without any specific title (saptamaḥ saptaikakaḥ), according to V. annonnakiriyasattikkayam; anyonyakriya niṣidhyate. Since it appears that here in the second (ninth) ajjh. the same subject is briefly treated of as in the fifth chuḍā, see page 254, [257] the latter must be regarded as an amplification. The constant explanation of the word is deserving of special mention nisiha, nisihiyā explained by nisitha (niś°), nisithikā. From this one might readily be led to assume that by this explanation conduct at night, or couch for the night was intended; and the introductory words (see above) are capable of being so explained. According to the scholiast, however, the contents appear to be of a different nature: tasyam svadhyayabhūmau (as it is described in ajjh. 8) yad vidheyam yacca na vidheyam. The use of these two words in other passages, especially in the Avaśy. Nijj., and the contents of the first chedaśutra itself which bears this name (see later on), point rather to nisedha than to nisitha. In the traditional conception as niśitha we have to deal with a direct misunderstanding, which is without prejudice to the remaining points of identity between nisiha and niśitha. The third culă, bhavaṇajjhayaṇam V. with but one udd, has 80 saptai'kakani ekasaräni, uddesakarahitani. 81 The following two cudas too, have only one udd. each and in this respect are exactly like the sattikkaya.
