Prof. G. R. Jain M.Sc., writes as follows in his book 'Cosmology Old and New':

"Aguru-Laghu attribute is said to be responsible for maintaining the individuality of the substances and its characteristic properties." (P. 100)
"There are six common attributes in all the six substances. They are Astitva (is-ness or indestructibility) Vastutva (functionality) Dravyatva (changeability) Prameyatva (knowability) Aguru-Laghutva (individuality) and Pradeśatva (capacity of having some form)." (P. 100)
It is mentioned in Kārtikeyānuprekṣā that Vyañjanā Paryāya accomplishes the special attributes of souls and matter. 14 We can infer from the above statements that Aguru-Laghu-Shad-Guṇī-Häni-Vṛtti-Paryaya stands for the existence of the six common attributes in all the substances.
With a little scientific thought we can learn that how Aguru-LaghuShad-Guni-Hani-Vṛtti-Paryāya endows the six common attributes in all the substances.
Acarya Pujayapada has hinted (Vide footnote 2 p. 4) that this Paryaya's imperceptible rhythmic rise and fall constantly taking place in the parts of the substance in six different steps produce Utpada and Vyaya. Thus the triple unity that is necessary to be an existence (Sat) is satisfied. Astitva also means existence.
This inherent and perpetual stationary wave motion of the substance itself forms its useful natural function (Arthakriya).15 This is Vastutva or functionality.
Substance is designated as Dravya because like Dravya (liquid) it assumes all modifications decided by the rising and decaying of the wave crests of this stationary wave motion. This ever modifying capacity is Dravyatva or changeability.
