Miniature Painting in Western India*
(12th-17th Century A.D.)

Before the time of the miniature paintings in India of the Rajput and Mughal styles, that is, before the late sixteenth century, there have been found in that country only two styles of miniature painting. One of these flourished in Nepal and northern Bengal, with dated specimens starting in the eleventh century'; the other in Gujarat, Kathiawar, and Rajputana, and is now known to have been existing in the early part of the twelfth century.
