It has become customary for scholars of Theravada Buddhism to derive Pali sutta not from an original Sanskrit sūtra but instead from sükta. Such an etymology would imply that the suttas were understood by the early Buddhists as equivalent to, and by their ethical content superior to the hymns (sūkta) of the R8 Veda.
