Thus, Ramakrishna Kavi was on the right track when he included the guess "somewhere near Sri Parvata, probably in the Andhra country” in his 1930 article (p. 239). However, he did not give any evidence or reasoning in support of his remark or provide a geographical specifi cation of Srī-parvata. 24. (a) Another possible identification of Tri-kūța, not as a mountain but as a region or country, will be taken up in 5.2. The assumption in my discussion at this point is that the sīkā phrase tri-kūțaika-desa-varti-tilingaikadeśād could originally have been different (a suspicion based on the repetition of eka-deśa, as on Thieme's part, but not resolved in the same way as Thieme proposes). The original form of the phrase was perhaps. as follows: tri-kūtaika-deśa-[varti...ity eke. anye tv āhuḥ . . .-/varti-tilingaika-deśād iti, i.e., the text available at present could be a result of haplography caused by the recurrence of varti. Resting on this assumption is the point of view that two possible lines of identification, one based on the name Tri-kūța and the other based on the name Tilinga, should be kept apart at this stage of the discussion. (b) As the Sabda-kal pa-druma (p. 655) notes, Sanskrit lexicons give the names Tri-kakud, Suvela, Tri-mukuta, Tri-śrnga, and Citra-kūţa in the same group as Tri-kūța.
