________________ 556 ABORI: R. G. Bhandarkar 1both Birth Anniversary Polume sben to have often overlapped (cf. IAL 4391, 2. “*grişman. (after hémanRşman)". 14 On the other hand the usual pk. word to express" heat, sweat" mppears to have been ghamma ( gharmá, IAL 4445 ), which apparently remained to connected with the exceptional ghimsu. On the contrary, perhaps it was not far-fetched, assuming the metathesis of the aspirate, to relate gimha- and ghimou : the interpretation as a loc. pl. was near at hand, all the more so as the seasons' nashes are naturally often used in the locative, and are more than once in the plural (cf. supra, pa. gimhāna ; moreover PW, s. v. varşá., 2) m. n. a ) Regen, passim; b) n. pl. Regenzeit, AV). Hence the interpretation ghim-su, loc. pl. ir in the hot season, in summer". It could be easily accepted as it did not involve absurdities or major difficulties. Nevertheless, there can be no doubt that in the “ seniors.” of the canon, ghimsu had been used in its original form and meaning, which both can be shown to be connected, ultimately, with ghramsás, rare in Vedic, unknown in classical Sanskrit.
