Dans la littérature ancienne, le terme anuvākhyāna ne se rencontre que dans une énumération d'ouvrages littéraires qui est répétée trois fois dans la Brhadāranyaka Upanişad et une fois dans la Maiträyaniya Upanişad. Cette énumération a la forme suivante:
