A single, undifferentiated word is put in a class by the mind (of hearers).' (=svā jātih prathamam sabdaih sarvair evābhidhīyate / tato 'rthajātirūpesu tadadhyāro pakalpanā // — Vākyap. III, 6.) (fr. 18) "The first syllables (akşara) have each of them something to be seen (visible aspect) and express (meaning) in such a way, that the capability (of hearers to interpret them) is multiple. There are many kinds of those expressing ways.?” ( Eekaşminn api dịśye 'rthe darśanam bhidyate prthak / kālāntareņa vaiko 'pi tam paśyaty anyathā punah // ekasyäpi ca sabdasya nimittair avyavasthitaih / ekena bahubhiś cārtho bahudhā parikalpyate //- vākyap. II, v. 33. p. 82) Bhavya, the Mādhyamika philosopher, commenting upon Nāgārjuna's Madhyamaka-śāstra IX, 3 cites the following verse : 8 8 This verse is not found in the corresponding passage in the Chinese translation by Prabhāmitra of Bhāvaviveka's Prajñāpradipa ( A , , ** W , WE S, Taisho Tripitaka, vol. XXX, p. 82c). According to Prof. Nozawa it is likely that this verse was omitted by tne translator.
