The main work of the Tathāgatagarbha school, the Ratnagotravibhāga, has been edited by E. H. Johnston (Patna, 1950) and translated by J. Takasaki. 56 The doctrine of the tathāgatagarbha has been studied on the basis of Indian and Tibetan materials by David Seyfort Ruegg.57 Ruegg is not the first scholar to have studied Indian Buddhist philosophy in the light of the Tibetan philosophical tradition. Obermiller, for instance, made use of works written in Tibet. However, nobody before him has studied Tibetan works on such a large scale.
Much work has been done also on the epistemological school of Buddhism, first by Frauwallner and other scholars of the Vienna schờol:58 Hattori Masaaki translated the first chapter of the Pramāṇasamuccaya.59 As to Dharmakirti, one must mention the texts published by Rāhula Sānkstyāyana (see Yamada Ryūjo’s Bongo butten no shobunken, Kyoto, 1959, pp. 142–143). An excellent edition of the first chapter of the Pramāņavārttika was published by Raniero Gnoli.60 Tilman Vetter translated the first chapter of the Pramāņaviniscaya and wrote on epistemological problems in Dharmakīrti.61 Frauwallner studied the order in which the works of Dharmakirti were composed.62 Ernst Steinkellner published the Tibetan text, a reconstruction of the Sanskrit text and a richly annotated translation of the Hetubindu. He also wrote two articles on Dharmakīrti's philosophy:63 We shall refrain from mentioning publications
