E. oft gæft ara tot पुष्टि करते हुए कहते हैं, “म० गाँधी को तीनों प्रतिज्ञाएँ किसी ब्राह्मण से नहीं, बल्कि बेचर जी नाम के जैन-साधु से दिलवाई थीं" । म० गाँधी जी अपनी 'आत्मकथा' में स्वयं स्वीकार करते हैं कि, "मुझे कई बार मांस-भक्षण और शराब पीने के लिये विलायत में मजबूर किया गया, परन्तु ऐसे अवसरों पर जैन-गुरु से ली हुई प्रतिज्ञा मेरे सम्मुख आ खड़ी होती थी, जिसके कारण मैं इन पापों से बचा रहा"। अाज का सारा संसार गाँधी जी को अहिंसा का सच्चा पुजारी स्वीकार करता है और वास्तव में वे अहिंसा के दृढ़ श्रद्धानी थे और इन्हीं के प्रभाव से देश ने अहिंसाको अपनाया, परन्तु गाँधी जी ने अहिंसा तत्व को कहाँ से प्राप्त किया ? इटली के विचारक Luciano Magrini के शब्दों में, "महात्मा जी ने अहिंसा सिद्धान्त को जैनधर्म से ही सीख कर इतनी ऊँची पदवी प्राप्त की है" | Dr. Felix Valyi के अनुसार, "जैनगुरु
