राजतरिङ्गिणी में लिखा है, "अशोक ने कशमीर में जिनशासन का प्रचार किया" । 'जिन' शब्द जैन धर्म का नामकरण है । शब्दकोश भी 'जिन' का अर्थ 'जिनेन्द्र' ही बताते हैं । अबुलफजल आइनेअकबरी में बताते हैं, "जिस प्रकार इनके पिता बिन्दुसार और पितामह चन्द्रगुप्त ने मगध में जैनधर्म का प्रचार किया था, उसी प्रकार अशोक ने कशमीर में जैन धर्म को सुदृढ़ बनाया" २ । वास्तव में अशोक के हृदय पर जिनेन्द्र भगवान की शिक्षा का • गहरा प्रभाव पड़ा' । यह जैनधर्मी थे और इन का राज्य जैन-राज्य था । Smith के शब्दों में महाराजा सम्प्रति ने जैन व्रतों को एक सच्चे वीर के समान पाले थे और अनेक प्रकार
