In his Hibbert Lectures for 1831 Rhys Davids proposes to deal with two suggestions which militate against Buddha's originality. On the one hand he quotez Prof. Jacobi for the vie' that " the Buddhist theory of the Buddlas was derived from a corresponding theory of the forerunners of the Jains." The
