CHAPTER VIII.
The comparison of some minor points of simi
larity between Jainism and Buddhism.
Now we shall pass on to the comparison of some of the Buddhist, and Jain doctrines the similarity of which has struck so many European scholars, and from which some of thein, like Lassen and Barth, have argued that Jainism has branched off from Buddhism. The first point of similarity that strikes one is that both sects know their prophets by the same epithets or titles, such as Jina, Araht, Mahavira, Tathagata, Buddha, Sambuddha, Mukta, etc. Although all these names occur more or less frequently in the writings of both sects, (with the exception of Jina) eaclı sect seems to give preference to distinct sets of title ; Buddha Tathugata and Sambuddha are commonly and generally applied to the founder of Buddhism, while Vira and Vahavira form the titles of Vardhamana.
