NOTE.
I am not in a position to judge the opinion put forward by the Jains that Brahminism took its birth in the time of their 8th Jina. The Jains support their view by prov. ing that Saktayana, the learned grammarian mentioned by Panini, was a Jain, and that this Saktayana's name occurs in the Rig Veda and Sulka Yajurveda. But the decision of this moot question any way cannot affect our subject.
I shall confine myself to facts which I can prove and by Jains I shall understand only those who can be proved to be Jains. Even taking the least favourable view, even following the general opinion of European Scholars that Brahminism is earliar than Jainism, I think we are in a position to prove satisfactorily the priority of Jainism over Buddhism. I think it my duty to repeat that when I speak of Jainism as posterior to Brahmanism I confine myself to Jainism as prevailing
