CHAPTER XIV. Charye of Atheism examined. After stating and comparing the various doctrines and theories of the two systems, we are now in a position to examine the charge that is laid against them of being atheistical. There is not the slightest doubt that the Jains and Buddbists do not believe in Isvara or the personal God, they do not believe in God as the creator, preserver or dissolver of the universe ; in other words they do not believe in a Supreme Being, who is “both the efficient and the material cause of all that exists, and is likewise the Lord and Ruler of the world." In this respect they agree with the Sankhya philosophy of Kapila, who thinks that there is. Do proof to believe in the existence of supreme personal God. According to him if there is a supreme Being, he must be free from all desires and anxieties, and therefore he could have no wish to create a world ;
