Dear Sir,
It was a pleasure to receive your kind letter of July 7th and the books which came later. I thank you very sincerely for the volumes relating to Vijaya Dharma Suri, both the life and the reminiscences compiled by yourself. I read also the book of Mr. Pertold on Jainism with much interest. It is a great encouragement to spiritual growth to have the record of so venerable and high spirited a man as the sainted Vijaya Dharma Suri, and such a life seems to bring back to our age the great spirit of antiquity. When I was in Gujarat in 1897 I had the honour of meeting a number of your co-religionists and was deeply impressed by the profound religious spirit animating then and even the common people seemed remarkably free from superstitions owing to the firm influences upon them of the Jain reglion.
You ask about my work. Last year I published a book entitled the 'Origin and Evolution of Religion' and I am now publishing a small volume on th Ethics of India.
Very sincerely yours,
E. W. HOPKINS. Shree Sudharmaswami Gyanbhandar-Umara, Surat www.umaragyanbhandar.com
