અંચલગચ્છ દિદશમ એકત્રીસ વર્ષ પહેલાંનું એમણે દોરેલું જૈન સાધુનું ચિત્ર ખરેખર, દર્શનીય છે. લેખિકાની તે વિષયક નેધ પણ રસપ્રદ છે, જે આ પ્રમાણે છે :
"The Jains are a peculiar cliss of ascetics, and well known by the notices of many learned oriental writers. They are frequently to be seen in Cucth, and have temples both at Anjar and Mandavie. Their dress is a simple white garments, descending in full folds from the
ier to the feet; their heads are bare, and cl. sely shaven; their walk is peculiarly slow, and their eyes are fixed on the ground, in apparently abstract contemplation: they carry in one hand a bunch of feathers, and in the other a small bag, or earthen pot. The most striking peculiarity in their appearance is given by a piece of gauze which they wear over the mouth, to prevent-as they believe-the possibility of any insect entering with the air they breathe. To des roy life, however unintentionally; is considered by the Jains to be an inexpiable sin; and lest they should ignorantly commit such, it is their custom to obstain from food after sun-set, to use no water which has not been previously strained, and to sweep the ground before their footsteps, lest they should cause death to some minute insect.”—(“Cutch” by Marianne Postans. ) જ્ઞાતિ શિરોમણી શેઠ નરશી નાથા
- ૨૩૦૮. કચ્છી દશા ઓશવાળ જ્ઞાતીય, નાગડા ગે ત્રીય, વિરાણું શાખીય નરશી નાથા સમર્થ પુરુષ થઈ ગયા. તેમણે પોતાની અનુપમ કારકિર્દીથી પિતાની જ્ઞાતિમાં શિરેમનું માનવંતું બિરુદ પ્રાપ્ત કર્યું. તેમની સમગ્ર જ્ઞાતિ પિતાના સર્વાગી વિકાસ માટે આ પ્રાતઃ સ્મરણીય મહાપુરુષનું ઋણ સ્વીકારવામાં તથા પિતાને “નરશી નાથાની નાત”ના ગણાવવામાં બહુમાન કે ગૌરવ અનુભવે છે. સામાજિક અને ધાર્મિક મૂલ્યાંકનના પરિવર્તનના આ યુગમાં પણ એમનાં કાર્યો જ્ઞાતિ તેમજ ગચ્છના ભવ્ય પુરુષાર્થ અને પ્રબળ ધર્મપ્રેમનાં પ્રતીક સમાન ગણાયાં છે. અને સૌ એમનાં સુકૃત્યોની અસરથી ઓતપ્રેત રહ્યા છે, તે દ્વારા જ એમને અસાધારણ પ્રભાવ સચિત થાય છે.
૨૩૦૯. સં. ૧૮૪૦ માં નલીઆ ગામમાં નાથા ભારમલની પત્ની માંકબાઈની કૂખે એમને જન્મ થયો. માતાનાં સ્વર્ગવાસથી તેઓ પિતાની છત્રછાયા હેઠળ ઉછર્યા. તે વખતે કેળવણીને ખાસ પ્રચાર નહોતે, તેમાંયે તક્ત ગરીબ સ્થિતિ હોઈને તેઓ અક્ષર જ્ઞાનથી વંચિત રહ્યા. મૂલ–મજૂરી કરી પેટિયું રળનાર કુટુંબમાં કેમ્બ્રિજ કી થયા એ વાત એમનાં પુરુષાર્થને મહાન અંજલિરૂપ છે.
૨૩૦. એમના વડદાદા પાલણના વીરે અને તોરેઓ એ નામના બે પુત્રો થયા. વીરોના ભારમલ અને તેમના હરશી, લખમણ, નાથા અને તેજા એમ ચાર પુત્રો થયા. નાથાના પુત્ર નરશી થયા, તેમના હીરજી અને મૂલજી એમ બે પુત્રો થયા. ઉક્ત તેજાના શેદે અને નેણશી થયા જેમનું વંશ વૃક્ષ “હિ પામ્યું. લખમણુના પુત્ર રાઘવ (ભાર્થી દેમતબાઈ) થયા. તેમના પુત્રો વીરછ (ભાર્યા લીલબાઈ),
