________________ [91] I will refer to the six Leshyas or complexions of the souls, ranging from deepest black to shining white colours, which we common mortals cannot perceive with our eyes. This doctrine was shared also by the Ajivikas; on whom Dr. Hoernle* has thrown so much light. These colours of the soul are produced on it by the karman which acts as a colouring substance. Here also the material nature of karman is quite obvious 14. To return from this digression, the karma matter that enters the soul is transformed ifito eight different kinds of kafman, about which i shall have to say a word presently. This change of the one substance into eight varieties of karman is likened to the frausformation of food consumed at one meal into the severál Muids of the body. The karmia matter thus transformed and assimilated builds up a subtle body, which invests the soul and accompanies it on all its transmigration, till it enters Nirvana and goes up to the top of the universe. This subtle body or karistattdshartrd is obvlousły the Jain counterpatt of the suksandt hatta or lingidshorită of the Sarikliyast.
