आगम सूत्र ३९, छेदसूत्र-५, 'महानिशीथ'
अध्ययन/उद्देश/सूत्रांक देखा करे और दूसरा बकवास करे । कोई चोरी, कोई जार कर्म करे, कोई कुछ भी नहीं करता । कुछ भोजन करने के लिए या अपनी शय्या छोड़ने के लिए समर्थ नहीं हो सकते । और मंच पर बैठे रहने के लिए शक्तिमान होते हैं । हे गौतम ! सचमुच मिच्छा मि दुक्कडम् इस तरह का देना हम नहीं कहते । दूसरा जो तुम कहते हो उसका उत्तर दूं सूत्र-१३११-१३१३
किसी मानव इस जन्म में समग्र उग्र संयम तप करने के लिए समर्थ न हो सके तो भी सद्गति पाने की अभिलाषावाला है । पंछी के दूध का, एक केश ऊखेड़ने का, रजोहरण की एक दशी धारण करना, वैसे नियम धारण करना, लेकिन इतने नियम भी जावज्जीव तक पालन के लिए समर्थ नहीं, तो हे गौतम ! उस के लिए तुम्हारी बुद्धि से सिद्धि का क्षेत्र इस के अलावा किसी दूसरा होगा? सूत्र-१३१४-१३१७
फिर से तुम्हें यह पूछे गए सवाल का प्रत्युत्तर देता हूँ कि चार ज्ञान के स्वामी, देव-असुर और जगत के जीव से पूजनीय निश्चित उस भव में ही मुक्ति पानेवाले हैं । आगे दूसरा भव नहीं होगा । तो भी अपना बल, वीर्य, पुरुषकार पराक्रम छिपाए बिना उग्र कष्टमय घोर दुष्कर तप का वो सेवन करते हैं । तो फिर चार गति स्वरूप संसार के जन्म-मरण आदि दुःख से भयभीत दूसरे जीव ने तो जिस प्रकार तीर्थंकर भगवंत ने आज्ञा की है, उसके अनुसार सर्व यथास्थित अनुष्ठान का पालन करना चाहिए । सूत्र-१३१८-१३२३
हे गौतम ! आगे तने जो कहा है कि परिपाटी क्रम के अनसार बताए अनष्ठान करने चाहिए । हे गौतम ! दृष्टांत सुन ! बड़े समुद्र के भीतर दूसरे कईं मगरमच्छ आदि के टकराने की वजह से भयभीत कछुआ जल में बुडाबुड़ करते, किसी दूसरे ताकतवर जन्तु से काटते हुए, उँसते हुए, ऊपर फेंकते हुए, धक्के खाते हुए, नीगलते हुए, त्रस होते हुए छिपते, दौड़ते, पलायन होते, हर एक दिशा में उछलकर गिरते, पटकते वहाँ कईं तरह की परेशानी भुगतता, सहता, पलभर जितना भी कहीं मुश्किल से स्थान न पाता, दुःख से संताप पाता, काफी लम्बे अरसे के बाद वो जल को अवगाहन करते करते ऊपर के हिस्से में जा पहुँचा । ऊपर के हिस्से में पद्मिनी का गाड़ जंगल था उसमें लील पुष्प गाड़ पड़ से कुछ भी ऊपर के हिस्से में दिखाई नहीं देता था लेकिन इधर उधर घूमते महा मुश्किल से जमीं नीलफूल में पड़ी फाट-छिद्र देखा तो उस वक्त शरद पूर्णिमा होने से निर्मल आकाश में ग्रह नक्षत्र से परिवरित पूनम का चन्द्र देखने में आया । सूत्र - १३२४-१३२८

उसी प्रकार चार गति स्वरूप भव समुद्र के जीव को मनुष्यत्व पाना दुर्लभ है । वो मिल जाने के बाद अहिंसा लक्षणवाले धर्म पाकर जो प्रमाद करते हैं वो कई लाख भव से भी दःख से फिर से पा सके वैसा मनष्यत्व पाकर जैसे कछुआ फिर से समृद्धि न देख सका, वैसे जीव भी सुन्दर धर्मसमृद्धि पाने के लिए समर्थ नहीं होता।
