________________ Ātmānusāsana आत्मानुशासन (cintāmaņi) provides fruit according to the thought. However, the fruit that dharma provides is automatic, beyond the wish and the thought. परिणाममेव कारणमाहुः खलु पुण्यपापयोः प्राज्ञाः । तस्मात् पापापचयः पुण्योपचयश्च सुविधेयः ॥२३॥ अर्थ – विद्वान् मनुष्य निश्चय से आत्मपरिणाम को ही पुण्य और पाप का कारण बतलाते हैं। इसलिये अपने निर्मल (शुभ) परिणाम के द्वारा पूर्वसंचित पाप की निर्जरा, नवीन पाप का निरोध और पुण्य का उपार्जन करना चाहिये। Knowledgeable men aver that, for sure, soul-modification (ātmapariņāma) is the cause of merit (punya) as well as demerit (pāpa). Therefore, (through pious soulmodification) you should destroy demerit (previously accumulated and fresh) and accumulate merit. EXPLANATORY NOTE Ācārya Umāsvāmi's Tattvārthasūtra: शुभः पुण्यस्याशुभः पापस्य ॥६-३॥ शुभ योग पुण्य कर्म के आस्रव में कारण है और अशुभ योग पाप कर्म के आस्रव में कारण है। Auspicious activity – śubhayoga - is the cause of merit (punya) and inauspicious activity – aśubhayoga – is the cause of demerit (papa). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24
