Atmānusāsana
आत्मानुशासन
करते हैं तथा जो स्वयं भी विशिष्ट विद्वानों की प्रशंसा एवं उन्हें नमस्कार आदि करता है; जो अभिमान से रहित है; लोक और लोकमर्यादा का जानकार है; सरल-परिणामी है; इस लोकसम्बन्धी इच्छाओं से रहित है; तथा जिसमें और भी आचार्य पद के योग्य गुण विद्यमान हैं; वही हेयोपादेय-विवेकज्ञान के अभिलाषी शिष्यों का गुरु हो सकता है।
The guru' or the 'spiritual teacher' of the discerning disciple is the one who possesses the following and other qualities of the chief preceptor (ācārya): complete knowledge of the Scripture; pure conduct or purity in the activities of the mind, the speech and the body; expertise in preaching others; keen interest in promulgation of the lofty path (to liberation); reverenced by the learned and with reverence for the unusually learned; modesty; knowledge of the worldly ways; tenderness; and free from worldly desires.
भव्यः किं कुशलं ममेति विमृशन् दुःखाद् भृशं भीतवान् सौख्येषी श्रवणादिबुद्धिविभवः श्रुत्वा विचार्य स्फुटम् । धर्म शर्मकरं दयागुणमयं युक्त्यागमाभ्यां स्थितं गृह्णन् धर्मकथां श्रुतावधिकृतः शास्यो निरस्ताग्रहः ॥७॥
अर्थ - जो भव्य है; मेरे लिये हितकारक मार्ग कौन सा है इसका विचार करने वाला है; दुःख से अत्यन्त डरा हुआ है; यथार्थ सुख का अभिलाषी है; श्रवण आदि बुद्धि-विभव से सम्पन्न है; तथा उपदेश को
