Ātmānusāsana
आत्मानुशासन
The two pans of the scale, one going up and the other down, clearly indicate that the man who desires to take is on the pan that goes down - he becomes downcast – and the man who does not desire to take is on the pan that goes up - he becomes exalted.
सस्वमाशासते सर्वे न स्वं तत्सर्वतर्पि यत् । अर्थिवैमुख्यसम्पादिसस्वत्वान्निःस्वता वरम् ॥१५५॥
अर्थ - जो मनुष्य धन से सहित होता है उससे सब लोग आशा रखते हैं - माँगने की इच्छा करते हैं। परन्तु ऐसा वह धन नहीं है जो कि सब ही याचकों को सन्तुष्ट कर सके। अतएव याचक-जन की विमुखता को । उत्पन्न करने वाले धनाढ्यपने की अपेक्षा तो कहीं निर्धनता ही श्रेष्ठ है।
All men look forward to receiving charity from the man of wealth; however, no amount of wealth can satisfy all supplicants. It is, therefore, better to be poor than a man of wealth who causes dissatisfaction among the supplicants.
आशाखनिरतीवाभूदगाधा निधिभिश्च या । सापि येन समीभूता तत्ते मानधनं धनम् ॥१५६॥
अर्थ - जो अत्यन्त गहरी आशारूप खान (गड्ढा) निधियों के द्वारा भी समान (पूर्ण) नहीं हो सकती है वह तेरे जिस स्वाभिमान-रूप धन से समान हो सकती है वह स्वाभिमान-रूप धन ही तेरा यथार्थ धन है।
