Ātmānusāsana
आत्मानुशासन
today, neither the expounders nor the listeners are easily found; to find those who adopt the prescribed conduct is a far cry.
गुणागुणविवेकिभिर्विहितमप्यलं दूषणं भवेत् सदुपदेशवन्मतिमतामतिप्रीतये । कृतं किमपि धाय॑तः स्तवनमप्यतीर्थोषितैः न तोषयति तन्मनांसि खलु कष्टमज्ञानता ॥१४४॥
अर्थ - जो गुण और दोष का विचार करने वाले सज्जन हैं वे यदि कदाचित् किसी दोष को भी बढ़ा-चढ़ा कर प्रगट करते हैं तो वह बुद्धिमान् मनुष्यों के लिये उत्तम उपदेश के समान अत्यन्त प्रीति का कारण होता है। परन्तु जो आगमज्ञान से रहित हैं ऐसे अविवेकी जनों के द्वारा यदि धृष्टता से कुछ प्रशंसा भी की जाती है तो वह उन बुद्धिमान् मनुष्यों के मन को सन्तुष्ट नहीं करती है। निश्चय से वह अज्ञानता ही दु:खदायक है।
If noble men, apt in discrimination between virtues and evils, at times, proclaim a certain fault, wise men take it as a favourable discourse and feel extremely contented. However, impudent praise by undiscriminating men, void of the knowledge of the Scripture, fails to satisfy those wise men. Certainly, ignorance is pitiful.
