________________ Verses 139, 140 celestial beings, later on (when these lose their freshness), even the foot refuses to touch. It is right; what is not lost with the loss of merit? हे चन्द्रमः किमिति लाञ्छनवानभूस्त्वं तद्वान् भवेः किमिति तन्मय एव नाभूः । किं ज्योत्स्नयामलमलं तव घोषयन्त्या स्वर्भानुवन्ननु तथा सति नासि लक्ष्यः ॥१४०॥ अर्थ - हे चन्द्र! तू मलिनता-रूप दोष से सहित क्यों हुआ? यदि तुझे मलिनता से सहित ही होना था तो फिर पूर्णरूप से उस मलिनता-स्वरूप ही क्यों नहीं हुआ? तेरी उस मलिनता को अत्यधिक प्रगट करने वाली चाँदनी से क्या लाभ है? कुछ भी नहीं। यदि तू सर्वथा मलिन हुआ होता तो वैसी अवस्था में राहु के समान किसी के देखने में तो नहीं आता। O moon! Why are you with the imperfection of dark spots? If you had to be with dark spots, why not all over? What use is your brightness which, in fact, amplifies the dark spots? Had you been with dark spots all over, you would have at least escaped the people's gaze, like Rāhu. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 115
