દલપતરામ સંપાદિત કાવ્યદોહનમાં અને કવિ નર્મદાશંકરના નગદ્યમાં કાપ૩પ અને ફેરફાર અને સુધારા વધારા કરવા સારૂ આપણે મહીપતરામને દોષ દઇએ છીએ; પણ ખરું કહીએ તો તે માટે સરકારી કેળવણી ખાતું જવાબદાર છે. સન ૧૮૭૩ માં પાઠય પુસ્તકાની સુધારણાના પ્રશ્ન વિચારવા પુનામાં એક કમિટી નિમાઈ હતી તેણે પાય પુસ્તકામાંથી ધર્મની ખાટી માન્યતાએ, દેવદેવાદિમાં અંધશ્રદ્ધા અને અજ્ઞાનતામૂળક અને ભ્રમજનક, રીતિનીતિનાં વર્ણન અને વિવેચના કાઢી નાખવા આગ્રહ કર્યાં હતા; અને એ અભિપ્રાયનું પ્રતિપાદન કરતાં જણાવ્યું હતું, કેઃ—
"let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth is a precept which can stand independently of its divine source and should rule in the interests of morality no less than in those of religion;” અને છેવટ એમ ઠરાવ્યું હતું, કે
×× "lead to the exclusion from a sanctioned' school course of all direct dogmatic teaching, such as that of metaphysics, fatalism etc., which is to be found in the કાવ્યદોહન.

એ કાવ્યદોહન કેટલા બધા લેાકાદર પામ્યું હતું અને સા કાએ તેની તારીફ કરી હતી અને કેળવણી ખાતાએ જ તેને ઉત્તેજન આપ્યું હતું તે સહુ આપણે પ્રથમ ભાગમાં જોયું છે; પરન્તુ બુક-કમિટીમાં તે પછીથી ક્રિશ્ચિયનધર્મી વાતાવરણનું પ્રાબલ્ય જામતાં ઉપરાક્ત વલણ અખત્યાર થયું હતું એમ અમારૂં માનવું છે.
