As I have already pointed out (ante, Vol. XXVI, p. 290), whon the revenge of Sifhet was paid in cowries, about 5,000 cowries were reckoned to the rupee. The actual reckoning in accounts was 5,120 cowries to the rupee. This came about by the use of another popular scale. In the Lilavati, as has been explained in the previous Section,
