________________ xvii disciples, It must be here remembered that the historicity of Pars'va, the twenty-third Tirthankara, is an acknowledged fact and that Jainism in its old form with fourteen Pūrvas was taught by Mahāvīra who reformed and disciplined it and mai e his personality deeply felt upon the further Corse of its development. It is from these Purvas that Gosala Mankhaliputta, the leader of Ajivakas, Jamali11 the son-in-law of Mahavīra and the propounder of a new sect, drew their inspiration. The Jain community rejuvenated by Mahāvīra lives on till now, while the sects of the latter teachers seem to have vanished soon after their propounders passed away. It was an era when establishing of religious sects, formulation of religious doctrines, efforts of the religious teachers to gather under their doctrinal fold a number of followers, seem to be the fashion of the day as politics or economics is now.
