trends and styles of Sanskrit and Vraj Bhasha was manifesting itself. As Vraj Bhasha freely borrowed from Sanskrit the metrics, rhetorics, principles of criticism and theory of emotions, Sanskrit also, in turn, was abundantly influenced by the trends and currents of style in Vraj Bhasha. There were some Sanskrit poets in North India who advocated experimenting on the measures of Vraj Bhasha also in Sanskrit language. The later Sanskrit poets were influenced by this apology for new experiments in verse forms of Vraj Bhasha which had been, by that time, interprovincially accepted as a medium of poetic expression.
Shri Krishna Bhatta himself was one of such poets. He represents a confluence of Sanskrit, Prakrit and Vraj Bhasha poetry. Though originally belonging to Andhra Pradesh he had settled in North India and had cultivated an astonishing command in Vraj Bhasha also. Being closely associated with the editing and publication of his works I have often wondered at the equal amount of felicity that he displays in composing Sanskrit and Prakrit poems in a wide variety of metres and writing chaste Vraj Bhasha in its 'Ghanakshari' and other stock-metres, keeping up their characteristic swing and rhythmic quality. Shri Gopal Narain Bahura of the Rajasthan Orie Research Institute has recently discovered the MS. of a 'Geetikavya' (Lyrical poem) by him entitled 'Ram Geetam' which evidences the poet's lyricism also. This excellence in poetry coupled with a high order of scholarship in Vedic Philosophy, Meemamsa, Vedanta, Grammar and other branches of learning make Shri Krishna Bhatta an extraordinarily erudite intellectual of his time.
This leads me to another striking quality of this work. The author follows the plan ot illustrating all the metrical forms, except the Vedic ones, by verses composed by himself rather than quoting from the classics. This practice has stood him in good stead particu- . larly in the Vraj Bhasha metres to find illustrations of which anywhere in Sanskrit poetry was not only difficult but impossible. It goes without saying that no one but a poet of Krishna Kavi's stature
