મહાવીર ગર્ભવાસમાં સ્થિર થવાથી તેમનાં માતાજી બહુ ખેદકુલ થયાં હતાં. એથી એ વિવેકશાલી પુરુષે માતાપિતા જીવન હોય ત્યાં સુધી દીક્ષા નહિ ગ્રહણ કરવાની, ગર્ભાવસ્થામાં જ પ્રતિજ્ઞા કરી હતી.
