The Arabs learnt the art of paper making form the Chinese and the first paper making factory was opened at Samarqand and the second. at Bagdad in 794 A.D. It is also accepted that some parts of Western India obtained knowledge of paper manufacture from the Arabs. The ruler of Kashmir is said to have imported paper workers from Samarqand. Some of the Jain literary sources from the 15th and 16th century provide information of the use of palm leaf and paper in the 12th century, the authenticity of the above statement is doubted by Muni Punyavijayji, whose knowledge of Jain MSS. is unparalleled. According to him there were no paper MSS. prior to the 13th and 14th centuries in the Jain Bhandaras that he knew of.
Various centers of paper manufacture are mentioned in India which are identified by their place names, such as, Daulatabadi from Daulatabad, Adilshahi from Karnataka, Nizamshahi from Nizamabad, Ahmedabadi from Ahmedabad etc. All these varities came under the title of 'Hindi paper'.
