Palm-leaf was used as a carrier in the absence of paper in the early period. The Palmyra palm tree which provided palm leaves for writing and painting is known as tala, in Sanskrit, has its Gujarati equivalevt as tad. Of the two types of tads, Sri tad and Khar tad: the latter grows in Gujarat and elsewhere but is unsuited for various reasons. Sri tad grows abundantly in Madras, Ceylon, Burma and Bengal.
