This Upanişad describes the characteristics of Sannyasins, and in illustration thereof it gives the names of certain Sannyasins known to have been characterized by them; it closes with a statement of the various difficulties that beset the life of the householder (LEFT) and are hence calculated to lead one to adopt the life of renunciation and asceticism in preference.
Beginning:
_पूर्णमदः इति शान्तिः ॥ अथ जनको ह वैदेहो याज्ञवल्क्यमुपसमेत्योवाच भगवन् सन्न्यासमनुब्रूहीति । कथं सन्न्यासलक्षणम् । स होवाच याज्ञवल्क्यः ब्रह्मचर्य समाप्य गृही भवेत् । गृहाहनी भूत्वा प्रव्रजेत् । यदि वेतरथा ब्रह्मचर्यादेव प्रव्रजेत् ।
