This Upanişad classifies the Sannyāsins under the four beads of Kuticaka, Bahudaka, Hainsa and Paramahainsa, gives the distinguishing marks of, as well as the duties appertaining to, each of these classes, and finally names certain Rșis who are respectively illustrative of these various classes of Sanurūsins. Beginning:
पूर्णमद इति शान्तिः । अथ भिषणां मोक्षार्थिनां कुटीचकबहूदकहंसपरमहंसाश्चेति चत्वारः । कुटीचको नाम गौतमभारद्वाजयाज्ञवल्क्यवसिष्ठप्रभृतयोऽष्टौ ग्रासांश्चरन्तो योगमार्गे मोक्षमेव प्रार्थयन्ते
