This Upanişad explains the origin of the facred ashes of Saivism kown as Bhasma or Vibhūti, its preparation, the deities presiding over it, the various ways in which it is to be used and the virtue or merit attached to its use, illustrating it all with a story; it also mentions the legendary origin of Rudrākṣa, and describes the merit that would accrue to the wearer of a string of Rudraksa beads. Beginning:
भद्रं कर्णेभिरिति शान्तिः। आपो वा झ्दमासन् सलिलमेव। स प्रजापतिरेकः पुष्करपणे समभवत् । तस्यान्तर्मनसि कामस्समवर्तत । इदं सृजेयमिति। तस्माद्यत्पुरुषो मनसाभिगच्छति । तद्वाचा वदति । तत्कर्मणा करोति । तदेषाभ्यनूक्ता । कामस्तदने समवर्तताधि । मनसो रेतः प्रथमं यदासीत् ।

ब्रह्मादिवन्दितं योगिध्येयं परं पदं यत्र गत्वा न निवर्तन्ते योगिनस्तदेतचाभ्युक्तम् । तद्विष्णोः परमं पदं सदा पश्यन्ति सूरयः । दिवीव चक्षुराततम् । तद्विप्रासो विपन्यवो जागृवांसस्समिन्धते । विष्णोर्यत्परमं पदम् ।
